Mercedes-AMG hypercar confirmed:: hybrid drivetrain, F1 technology to feature
The rumoured Mercedes-AMG hypercar has been confirmed today during the company’s press conference at the Paris motor show.
Previewed by a sketch of its silhouette (a-la Aston Martin AM-RB001), the new hypercar will be an ‘AMG Performance Hybrid’ featuring drivetrain technology from the company’s Formula One car.
Speaking at the Paris event, Thomas Weber, board member of Daimler and Mercedes-Benz, said the company has already started on the new car, and plans to “redefine efficiency and performance”.
“I am very excited to officially confirm: our next ‘big thing’ at AMG is already in the pipeline,” he said.
“We are going to create an AMG Performance Hybrid featuring our Formula One drivetrain technology.”
“Under the lead of AMG, our performance companies will join forces and create the most efficient and, at the same time, the best performing and most spectacular AMG of all time – some might even call it a hypercar,” he added.
Reports of the new performance flagship first surfaced last month, with the UK’s Evo magazine claiming the new hypercar will be powered by the same 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engine from the W07 Formula One race cars driven by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
Outputs are rumoured to be in the 1000hp (746kW) to 1500hp (1119kW) bracket, with 900hp (671kW) coming from the turbo V6 engine, and the remainder coming from two 160hp (119kW) electric motors – one at each front wheel.
Weber is still yet to confirm powertrain details and timing, though it’s believed the new Mercedes-AMG hypercar will be revealed some time next year as part of the company’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
